Previously: Thinking Julian was helpless, Chloe-Mae shoved Ruby aside and grabbed the diamond tiara. But when Julian snapped his eyes open and caught her wrist, the real trap—and the truth about his will—began to unfold.

The Final Verdict in a Courtroom Full of Lies

Three months later, the courtroom was packed. Chloe-Mae stood at the defendant's table, her hair a mess, her designer dress replaced by a cheap suit. She had no lawyer—she had spent her last dollar on a lawyer who quit after she refused to take a plea deal.

Julian sat in the front row, Ruby on his lap. The judge, a silver-haired woman named Patricia Okafor, stared down at Chloe-Mae with undisguised contempt.

"You are charged with attempted theft, child endangerment, and violation of a restraining order," the judge said. "How do you plead?"

Chloe-Mae's voice was shrill. "Not guilty! This is all a conspiracy! Julian faked a coma to trap me! He's a monster!"

The courtroom erupted in whispers. Julian remained calm, his hand resting on Ruby's back.

"Order!" the judge barked. She turned to Julian. "Mr. Cross, you claim you have evidence. Show us."

Julian stood, pulling a USB drive from his pocket. "Your Honor, this is a recording from a smartwatch I wore during the entire 'coma.' It captures every moment of the alleged incident, from the moment Chloe-Mae shoved my daughter to the moment she tried to steal my mother's tiara."

The video played on the courtroom screen. The sound of Chloe-Mae's cruel words filled the room—"Stay down on the floor!"—and Ruby's sobs echoed off the walls. Several jurors looked away.

When it ended, the judge's face was stony. "Ms. Parker, do you have anything to say for yourself?"

Chloe-Mae was trembling. "I... I was just trying to protect what was mine! Julian promised me a future! He said he loved me!"

Julian stepped forward. "I did love you, once," he said, his voice quiet but steady. "But you never loved me. You loved the money, the house, the tiara. You never even asked about Ruby's birthday."

Ruby looked up at him, her eyes wide. "It's my birthday today, Daddy."

Julian smiled. "I know, sweetheart. That's why I saved the best gift for last."

He turned to the judge. "Your Honor, I have one more piece of evidence. A will, executed the day before the coma began. It states that if Chloe-Mae attempts to contest any part of my estate, she will receive exactly one dollar—and she will be required to pay all legal fees."

Chloe-Mae screamed. "That's not legal! You can't do that!"

"It's completely legal," Julian said, "and it's already been filed with the probate court."

The judge banged her gavel. "Order! Ms. Parker, you are found guilty on all charges. You are sentenced to five years in state prison, and you are ordered to have no contact with Mr. Cross or his daughter, ever."

As Chloe-Mae was led away, she looked back at Julian with pure hatred. "You'll regret this!" she screamed.

Julian didn't answer. He knelt down and hugged Ruby tightly. "Happy birthday, princess."

Ruby smiled, tears streaming down her face. "Best birthday ever."

That evening, Julian took Ruby to her favorite ice cream shop, and they shared a sundae with extra sprinkles. He gave her a small velvet box—inside was a tiny tiara, a copy of the one in the vault.

"It's a promise," he said. "That I will always protect you, no matter what."

Ruby put it on, beaming. "I know, Daddy."

As they walked home hand in hand, Julian looked up at the stars and thought of his mother. He hoped she was proud. He had protected her legacy, and more importantly, he had protected his daughter.

Some traps aren't about catching villains. They're about proving that love is the only thing worth fighting for.
