Bringing Down the House of Lies

The next morning, the dining hall was packed with family, lawyers, and two uniformed officers. Diana and Marcus stood at one end of the table, their faces pale. Alistair sat at the head, with Ella on one side and Jake on the other.

"Mr. Marcus," Alistair began, his voice cold as stone. "You've been our family lawyer for fifteen years. I trusted you with everything. And you repaid me by conspiring to murder my daughter-in-law and defraud my granddaughter."

Marcus's face twitched. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Alistair held up the USB drive. "Then you won't mind explaining these emails—the ones where you discuss 'eliminating the obstacle' and 'securing the assets.'"

Diana lunged forward, but the officers held her back. "That's forged!" she screamed.

"It's not," Jake said, stepping forward. "I have the originals. I was the one Diana hired to break into this house and plant the forged blood chart. But I decided to record everything instead."

He pulled out his phone and played a recording. Diana's voice came through, clear and sharp: "Just make it look like an accident. The old man will never suspect."

Marcus's face went white. Diana's mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"Officers," Alistair said, "arrest them both. Charges of fraud, conspiracy, and attempted murder."

As they were led away, Diana fought against the officers, screaming obscenities. "You'll regret this, Montgomery! I know things about your family!"

But Alistair didn't flinch. "You know nothing," he said. "You never did."

The doors closed, and the room fell into a heavy silence. Ella let out a breath she'd been holding, and Jake put a hand on her shoulder.

"It's over," he said.

But Alistair shook his head. "Not quite. There's still the matter of the will—and the truth about your father."

He turned to Jake. "Your father was my brother, Thomas. He ran away when he was young, because our father disowned him for marrying your grandmother. But Thomas was always the rightful heir to a portion of this estate. And you're his son."

Jake's eyes widened. "I... I have a family?"

"You have a family," Alistair said, his voice softening. "And you have a place here, if you want it."

Jake looked at Ella, who smiled up at him. "You can be my big brother," she said.

Jake knelt down and hugged her. "I'd like that."

Alistair watched them, a rare tear sliding down his cheek. "There's one more thing," he said. "In the will, I'm leaving everything to Ella—and to you, Jake. But not as charity. As family."

He opened a drawer and pulled out a thick envelope. "This is the deed to the estate, and the official adoption papers. If you'll have me, I'd like to be your grandfather."

Jake's voice cracked. "I'd be honored."

The room erupted in applause. But in the corner, a young woman—a distant cousin—watched with a cold, calculating look. She had been Diana's accomplice, but she'd stayed hidden, waiting for her moment.

As the family celebrated, she slipped out of the room, pulling out her phone. "Tell Marcus the backup plan is in motion," she whispered.

Outside, the sun was setting, casting long shadows. Alistair looked out the window, a smile on his face, unaware of the storm gathering on the horizon.

But Ella saw it. She tugged on Jake's sleeve. "Jake, there's something else mommy left me. She said to only open it if the truth came out."

She pulled out a small, folded note from her dress pocket. On it, in Alice's handwriting, were the words: "The real treasure isn't in the safe. It's in the garden, under the old oak tree. Dig where I buried your first birthday gift."

Jake and Ella exchanged a look. "What do you think it is?" she asked.

Jake smiled. "Let's find out."

They slipped out the back door, hand in hand, as the family inside toasted to a new beginning. But the note's promise of a hidden treasure—and the shadow of the cousin who knew too much—would lead them into the next chapter of the Montgomery legacy.

And as the last light faded, Alistair watched them go, a pride swelling in his chest. "The truth always finds its way," he said to himself. "And sometimes, it brings a family back together."
