Previously: Elena's sister-in-law forged a DNA test to steal her daughter's inheritance. But hidden inside a chess king was a secret that would expose everything — and change their lives forever.

The Second Compartment Held a Secret That Changed Everything

Judge Sterling held the folded paper up to the light, her brow furrowed. Elena rose to her feet, her legs shaking. Mila pressed close to her side, clutching the pink cardigan's hem.

"This is a codicil," the judge said slowly, "signed by your mother, dated three weeks before she passed." She looked up. "It states that the entirety of the estate — including the mansion, the trust, and the offshore accounts — is to be held in trust for Mila, with you as guardian. No one else. Not even your father."

Elena's mind raced. Her mother had been quiet, always in the background, always overshadowed by her father's booming presence. But she had been sharp. She must have suspected Rachel's scheming long before anyone else.

"Why didn't she tell me?" Elena whispered.

"Because she knew you'd confront Rachel," the judge said. "And Rachel would have destroyed the evidence before you could use it."

Rachel was gone, but the threat lingered. The officers had taken her to the station, but her network ran deep. The lab technician she'd paid, the lawyer who'd drafted the forged papers — they were all still out there.

Elena clutched the chess king. There had to be more. Her father had been meticulous. She turned it over, running her fingers along the base. A tiny seam appeared — one she'd never seen before.

"There's something else," she said.

Judge Sterling took the piece and pried open the seam. Inside was a small, folded map. It was hand-drawn, with a red X marking the old boathouse on the estate's lake.

"The boathouse?" Elena frowned. "It's been locked for years. No one's allowed in there."

"Maybe that's why it's the perfect hiding spot," the judge said.

They drove to the estate in silence. Mila fell asleep in the backseat, her cheek pressed against the window. Elena watched the trees blur past, her heart pounding. Every time she thought she'd reached the end of this maze, another corridor opened.

The boathouse stood rotting on the lakeshore, its wooden planks warped and green with moss. The lock was rusty but intact. Elena produced the key from the chess king's second compartment — it fit perfectly.

Inside, the air was damp and cold. A single beam of sunlight cut through a broken window, illuminating a stack of old trunks. Elena pried open the largest one. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, was a steel box with a combination lock.

"What's the code?" Judge Sterling asked.

Elena thought. Her mother's birthday? Her father's? Then she remembered — the chess king was carved in 1998, the year her parents married. She spun the dial: 1-9-9-8. The lock clicked open.

Inside, she found the original will — the one Rachel had claimed was missing. It was notarized, witnessed, and sealed with a wax emblem. Next to it lay a stack of bank statements showing Rachel's massive withdrawals from the family trust over the past decade.

"This is enough to put her away for life," the judge said, her voice grim.

Elena's hands trembled. She'd done it. She'd protected Mila. But as she lifted the will, a small photograph fell out — a picture of her mother and a man she'd never seen before. They were standing on the boathouse dock, laughing, their arms around each other.

On the back, in her mother's handwriting: "The truth is always hidden in plain sight."

Elena's blood ran cold. The man in the photo had the same eyes as Rachel.

"Who is this?" she asked, showing the photo to the judge.

Judge Sterling studied it, her face going pale. "That's Richard Sterling. My ex-husband."

Elena's legs gave out. She collapsed onto the dusty floor, the photo fluttering from her hands. The judge — the woman who had just saved her — was connected to Rachel in a way she'd never imagined.

"The bribery," Elena whispered. "It wasn't just the lab. It was you."

Judge Sterling's face twisted with something between sorrow and rage. "No. Not me. But I know who it was." She pulled out her phone, dialing a number. "And he's about to face the same court he once corrupted."

Elena watched, frozen, as the judge spoke into the phone. "Richard, it's Victoria. I found it. The original will. And the photo of you and my mother."

The line went silent. Then a voice — cold, familiar — said, "Then you know everything."

It was Rachel's voice.
