The Hollow Chess King Revealed the Truth — My Sister-in-Law's Scheme Crumbled
Previously: Elena's sister-in-law forged a DNA test to steal her daughter's inheritance. But hidden inside a chess king was a secret that would expose everything — and change their lives forever.
The Voice on the Phone Was Not Rachel's — It Was Someone Far More Dangerous
The judge's face went ashen. She pressed the phone to her ear, her knuckles white. "That's not possible. Rachel is in custody."
But the voice on the other end laughed — a deep, rumbling laugh that made Elena's skin crawl. It was Richard Sterling, the judge's ex-husband. And in the background, Elena could hear Rachel's muffled voice, crying out for help.

"You thought you'd won," Richard said. "But you've only just lost. That will you found? It's a forgery — I made sure of it. The real one was burned years ago."
Judge Sterling's eyes narrowed. "You're lying."
"Am I?" Richard's voice was smug. "Check the notary's stamp. You'll see it's dated the same day I had the lab falsify the DNA test — a week after your mother died. The real will was signed three months earlier, and I have it."
Elena's world tilted. She grabbed the will, scanning the notary's signature. The date was there — the day after her mother's funeral. Her mother had been dead. Her father must have forged it, or Richard had coerced him.
"Why are you doing this?" Elena shouted into the phone. "What did we ever do to you?"
"Your mother," Richard said, his voice turning cold, "was supposed to marry me. But she chose your father. She took everything from me — the family, the fortune, the respect. So I took it all back."
Judge Sterling's face crumpled. "You used me. You married me just to get close to them."
"You were a means to an end, Victoria. And now, you're going to help me finish it."
The line went dead. The boathouse fell silent, save for Mila's soft breathing from the car outside.
"We need to find him," Elena said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "Before he destroys the real will and gets away with everything."
Judge Sterling nodded, wiping her eyes. "He'll be at the estate. He always keeps his trophies close."
They drove back to the mansion, the gravel crunching under the tires. The sun had set, casting long shadows across the lawn. Inside, the house was eerily quiet. The officers had taken Rachel, but Richard was nowhere to be seen.
Elena moved through the hallways, her heart hammering. She checked the study, the library, the conservatory. Nothing. Then Mila tugged her sleeve and pointed at the fireplace. "Mama, there's a face."
Elena knelt, peering into the dark hearth. There, behind a loose brick, was a small metal box. She pried it open. Inside was the original will — her mother's true last testament, dated three months before her death. It named Elena as sole executor and Mila as sole heir, with no mention of Rachel or Richard.
But there was one more line, written in her mother's shaky handwriting: "If this is found, know that I loved you more than life itself. And know that Richard Sterling is not your father — he never was. Your father was a good man, but he was not the man who raised you."
Elena's breath caught. "What?"
Judge Sterling read the line, then looked up, her face pale. "Elena, there's something you need to know. Richard Sterling is my ex-husband. But before that, he was your mother's first husband. They were married for two years before she divorced him and married your father."
Elena's mind reeled. "So Richard is my… stepfather?"
"No," Judge Sterling said softly. "He's your biological father."
The room spun. Elena grabbed the mantel, her knuckles white. Mila looked up at her with wide eyes. "Mama?"
"It's okay, baby," Elena whispered, her voice cracking. "I just found out something big."
She looked at the will again. There was a codicil, written in a different hand — Richard's. It read: "I, Richard Sterling, hereby renounce all claims to the estate of Eleanor Vance, and acknowledge that I have no legal standing as father of Elena Vance. This is my final word."
It was dated the same day as the forged DNA test.
"He knew," Elena said, her voice shaking. "He knew I was his daughter, and he still tried to take everything from me."
Judge Sterling put a hand on her shoulder. "Then we have everything we need. The original will, Richard's renunciation, and the security footage of Rachel paying the lab. He's done."
They called the police. Richard was found in the estate's wine cellar, packing a duffel bag with cash and documents. He looked up when they entered, his eyes cold.
"You found it," he said flatly.
"And more," Elena said, holding up the will. "You're not my father. You never were. And you'll never touch a penny of this family's money again."
Richard's face twisted with rage, but the officers were already cuffing him. As they led him away, he looked back at Elena, his voice low. "You think you've won? You've only just begun. There's another secret, Elena. One your mother buried deeper than this."
He laughed as they dragged him out. Elena stood in the doorway, the will clutched to her chest, Mila's hand in hers. She didn't know what secret he meant. But she knew one thing — no matter what else was buried, she would face it. She had to. For Mila.
"Come on, baby," she said, her voice soft. "Let's go home."
As they walked out into the night, the stars twinkled overhead. Elena looked up at them, feeling her mother's presence in the cool breeze. She had won today. And she would win every day after, as long as she kept fighting for her daughter.
Some secrets, she realized, were worth uncovering. And some truths, once revealed, set you free.
