The damp, metallic tang of rust and stagnant rainwater hung heavy in the midnight air. Natalie pressed her back against the cold, jagged metal of a ruined turquoise sedan, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her forehead throbbed with a blinding pain; a deep gash from her escape was still weeping warm blood down her temple, mixing with the cold rain. But she couldn't feel the physical pain. All of her senses were locked onto the tiny, trembling body of her seven-year-old daughter, Olivia.

With a trembling hand, Natalie covered Olivia’s mouth. The little girl’s eyes, wide with sheer terror, stared up from beneath the hood of her bright yellow sweatshirt. Natalie shook her head slowly, a silent plea for absolute silence. If Olivia made even a whisper of a sound, they would be caught.

Just yards away, the harsh, white beams of heavy-duty flashlights sliced through the darkness, illuminating the skeletal remains of stacked SUVs and crushed sedans. The heavy crunch of boots on wet gravel sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through Natalie's veins.

"We have to find her before it is too late,"

one of the officers called out, his voice echoing eerily through the metal labyrinth.

It was Officer Davis. Natalie recognized his voice instantly. He had been a frequent guest at her dinner table, a trusted colleague of her husband, Thomas. But tonight, Davis wasn't a family friend. He was a hunter, and Natalie was his prey.

The searchlights swept closer, illuminating the rusted wheel well where Natalie and Olivia huddled. The glaring beam passed mere inches from Natalie's eyes, forcing her to squeeze them shut, praying that the shadows of the auto graveyard would shield them. She held Olivia tighter, realizing that the people sworn to protect them were now the ones they feared the most. How had her perfect life crumbled into this nightmare?
