Previously: Hiding behind a rusted car in a damp junkyard, Natalie held her breath as police flashlights swept the dark. But the officers weren't there to rescue her—they were hunting her.

The Betrayal in the Shadows

The beam of a flashlight suddenly stalled, locking onto the yellow fabric of Olivia’s sweatshirt. Natalie’s breath caught in her throat.

"Over here!"

Davis shouted, his footsteps instantly accelerating.

Natalie scrambled backward, pulling Olivia with her, but they were trapped. Within seconds, the blinding light was directly in her eyes. Standing behind the beam were Officer Davis and a younger rookie officer, Miller. Both men had their hands on their holstered weapons.

"Natalie, stop running,"

Davis said, his voice deceptively calm.

"You're making this look a lot worse than it is. Just hand over the drive, and we can all go home."

Natalie stood up slowly, keeping Olivia shielded behind her. Her voice shook, but her resolve was absolute. "You know what's on that drive, Davis. You know Thomas is the one who took the bribe. He framed me to cover his own tracks!"

Officer Miller looked between Davis and Natalie, his expression shifting from professional focus to deep confusion.

"Davis, what is she talking about? The chief said she was unstable and kidnapped the kid."

"She's lying, Miller,"

Davis snapped, his tone hardening as he drew his weapon.

"She's a suspect. Hand over the evidence, Natalie, or I will have to use force."

Natalie felt a cold dread wash over her. Thomas, her husband and the highly respected police detective, had orchestrated this entire hunt. He had used his power to frame her, telling his precinct that she had suffered a psychotic break and stolen their daughter. In reality, Natalie had uncovered a ledger proving Thomas was laundering money for a powerful local cartel. When she tried to flee, he had attacked her, causing the gash on her forehead, before she managed to escape into the night with Olivia and the incriminating flash drive hidden in Olivia's yellow hoodie.

Now, cornered in a damp junkyard, Natalie realized Davis was deep in Thomas's pocket. He wasn't going to take her to a police station. He was going to make sure she never spoke again.
