Abigail stared at the document, the black ink blurring before her eyes. The name on the paper was Richard Miller, a legendary black-ops soldier who had vanished two decades ago after being accused of selling state secrets. Growing up in a series of foster homes, Abigail had only been told that her father died in combat. Finding out he was branded a traitor was a devastating revelation.

“This is a mistake, Colonel,”

Abigail whispered, her voice cracking. “My father was a hero. He wouldn't do this.”

Colonel Vance stepped closer, his stern demeanor cracking to reveal a flicker of pain. “I knew Richard, Abigail. I was his commanding officer. When he went dark, the military buried the truth to protect the academy's reputation. But someone in the high command leaked your connection. They want you gone before the press finds out that a traitor's daughter is about to graduate at the top of her class.”

Anger replaced Abigail's shock. She gripped the rifle tripod, knuckles turning white. “So you’re just going to throw me away? To protect some politicians? I am not my father!”

“I’m trying to protect you!” Vance hissed, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. He looked around the darkening range to ensure they were alone. “The people who framed your father are still in power, Abigail. They didn't just find out about you. They orchestrated this transfer to put you in a place where you can be easily silenced. If you stay here, you’re a target.”

Abigail locked eyes with the man she had respected for years. She saw the fear in his eyes—not for himself, but for her. “If they framed him, then the truth is still out there. And I’m not running from it.”
