Previously: When Matteo finds his secret ex-partner Elena bruised and crying in his restaurant's kitchen, a shocking revelation about their daughter uncovers a web of high-society lies.

The Cost of a Lie

The silence that followed Elena’s confession was suffocating. The hum of the industrial refrigerators seemed to grow louder, amplifying the sudden, deadly shift in the room's atmosphere. Matteo stared at Victoria, his chest rising and falling in heavy, ragged breaths. The fiancée he thought was his perfect match suddenly looked like a stranger—a monster hiding behind a silver satin facade.

"Is this true?" Matteo whispered, his voice dangerously low. "My daughter? The child you told me died at birth, Victoria?"

Victoria’s perfect composure began to crack. She took a step back, her heels clicking nervously against the wet tile. Her eyes dangled from Matteo to Elena, her expression hardening into a sneer of pure venom.

"Don't listen to this garbage, Matteo," Victoria snapped, discarding her sweet persona. "She's a manipulative liar who wants your money. Your family paid her off years ago to disappear. I just made sure she stayed where she belonged—hidden away, cooking for my guests."

Elena shook her head, clutching the edge of the sink for support. "That's not how it happened," she sobbed. "Victoria found me when I was pregnant. She told me that if I ever contacted you, your family would use their lawyers to take my baby away forever. She offered me this job on one condition: I had to work in the shadows, and I could never let you see my face."

Matteo stepped toward Victoria, his presence towering and menacing. "And the bruise, Victoria? Did she get that from a cabinet door, or did your 'help' involve something else?"

Victoria scoffed, trying to maintain her aristocratic dignity, but her hands were shaking. "She tried to speak to you tonight! She was going to ruin our engagement! I did what was necessary to protect our future, Matteo. She’s nothing but a kitchen maid!"

With a surge of protective rage, Matteo reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He dialed a number, his eyes locked on his trembling fiancée. "Security? Cancel the party. Tell the guests the wedding is off."
