A Kind Waiter Got Fired for Helping a Bruised Stranger in the Rain
Previously: When nineteen-year-old Logan defied his ruthless boss to help a battered man collapsing outside the cafe, he lost his job instantly. But he had no idea who the stranger really was.
The Arrival of the Fleet
Logan stood frozen in the freezing rain, the weight of Terence’s words sinking in. At nineteen, this job was his only source of income, his only way to pay rent. Yet, looking down at the shivering man beside him, he knew he couldn't regret his choice. He knelt back down, wrapping his own dry apron around Mitchell’s shoulders to shield him from the biting wind. The rain poured down in sheets, blurring the neon signs of the harbor.
"Don't worry about him," Logan said, trying to sound brave. "We'll get you some help. Are you sure you don't need an ambulance?"
Mitchell shook his head, clutching his phone tightly. His eyes, sharp and intelligent despite the bruises, watched Logan with quiet intensity.
"I don't need an ambulance, young man," Mitchell said, his voice surprisingly steady now. "I just needed to know if there was still decency left in this city."
Before Logan could ask what he meant, the dark street was suddenly illuminated by bright, piercing headlights. Three massive, black luxury SUVs rounded the corner, their tires splashing through the deep puddles. They pulled up directly in front of the Midnight Harbor Cafe, completely blocking the street. Logan stared in disbelief as several men in immaculate dark suits stepped out into the rain, holding large black umbrellas.
Inside the cafe, Terence pressed his face against the window, his eyes wide with sudden panic. The men in suits didn't look like police; they looked like high-level security. One of them, an older man with graying hair, rushed forward and knelt beside Mitchell.
"Mr. Vance! We've been looking everywhere for you after the assault," the man said, his voice laced with deep respect and worry.
Logan’s jaw dropped. Mr. Vance? The name was famous. Mitchell Vance was the reclusive billionaire real estate mogul who owned the entire Midnight Harbor district—including the very building the cafe rented.
