A Voice in the Fog

The autumn mist hung low over the cemetery, wrapping the ancient oak trees in a damp, gray shroud. Sarah knelt on the cold ground, her fingers gently tracing the carved letters on the cold marble headstone. Beneath her touch lay the names of Leo and Toby, the twin boys she and her husband, John, had lost three agonizing years ago. She pulled her heavy black shawl tighter around her shoulders, but it did nothing to block out the chill that had settled deep within her soul.

John stood beside her, his face a mask of silent grief. He stared down at the porcelain photograph of two smiling infants embedded in the stone. It was a daily ritual of sorrow, a quiet place where they could pretend their broken family was still whole. The rustle of dry, yellow leaves broke the silence. Out of the fog emerged a young girl, no older than six, wearing a faded floral dress that seemed entirely too thin for the freezing weather.

She stopped right beside Sarah, her bright blue eyes fixed on the photograph. Slowly, she raised her small hand and pointed. "They're not gone," she said, her voice surprisingly clear in the quiet afternoon.

John gasped, his entire body tensing as he looked down at the child.

"What did you say?"
he asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of confusion and sudden, desperate hope.

The girl looked directly at him, her expression hauntingly calm.

"They stay with me,"
she replied.

Sarah felt a shockwave ripple through her chest. She gasped, grabbing John’s arm as she stared at the mysterious child.

"Who?"
she whispered, barely able to breathe.

Lily pointed to the photo of the twins once more.

"Both of them."

John dropped to his knees, his eyes wide and wild with a desperate, burning urgency.

"Where, Lily? Where are they?"

The girl began to turn away, her gaze drifting toward the iron gates of the cemetery.

"At the orphanage,"
she whispered.

Tears welled in Sarah's eyes as she looked at her husband. It was impossible, and yet, a mother's instinct screamed that this was the truth. John clutched the girl's hand, his voice cracking with emotion.

"Take us there."

John clutched the girl's hand, his voice cracking with emotion. "Take us there."
