A Wealthy Father Returns Home Early Only to Find His Missing Daughter Scrubbing His Floors
An Unexpected Homecoming
The heavy mahogany double doors of the Vanderbilt estate creaked open, letting in the cool autumn breeze. James stepped into the grand foyer, loosening his tie after a grueling five-hour board meeting. He expected the usual silence of his multi-million-dollar mansion, perhaps punctuated by the soft classical music his new wife, Beatrice, loved to play. Instead, the first sound that greeted him was the rhythmic, wet scraping of a scrub brush against limestone tiles, accompanied by a soft, muffled sob.
James paused, his leather briefcase slipping slightly in his grip. He walked past the grand curved oak staircase and froze. Kneeling on the cold, soapy floor was a young blonde woman in a classic black-and-white maid's uniform. Her shoulders shook violently as she worked, tears dripping from her chin into the dirty suds. There was something agonizingly familiar about the curve of her neck, the way her blonde hair was pinned back, and the silver locket dangling from her neck.
"Dad?" she gasped, looking up.
James felt the air leave his lungs. The briefcase fell from his hand, clattering loudly against the hard floor. The girl looking up at him with red, swollen eyes was Emily. His daughter. The daughter who had supposedly run away two years ago, leaving nothing but a cold, typewritten note saying she never wanted to see him again. He had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on private investigators, only to be told she had fled the country.
Before he could find his voice, Emily quickly lowered her head, sobbing hysterically as she began furiously scrubbing the tiles again, as if terrified of being caught resting. From the shadow of the adjacent parlor, a smooth, elegant voice broke the heavy silence.
"You're home so early, darling," Beatrice said, swirling a crystal glass of expensive red wine.
She stepped into the light, her eyes gleaming with a cold, calculated amusement.
