Previously: When a smug wealthy man sneered at a humble young mechanic, he thought he could get away with abuse. He had no idea the boy's father was watching.

The Mask of Wealth Slips

Richard let out a sharp, mocking laugh. He looked Charles up and down, unimpressed by the older man's tailored suit. To Richard, anyone associated with a grease-monkey mechanic couldn't possibly pose a threat to his social standing.

"Your son?"
Richard chuckled, crossing his arms.
"Well, then you should have taught him his place. He’s been sniffing around my daughter, Emily, thinking he can climb out of the gutter. I merely did what any protective father would do. And who are you supposed to be, old man? Some retired driver?"

Toby stepped forward, wanting to protect his father, but Charles gently held up a hand to stop him. The older man’s expression remained stony, devoid of the fear Richard expected to see. Instead, Charles reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a sleek, matte-black smartphone. He tapped the screen twice and placed a call on speakerphone.

"Marcus,"
Charles said when the call connected.
"Pull the funding for the Riverside Development Project. Effective immediately. And call in the outstanding loans on Vanguard Enterprises."

On the other end of the line, a professional voice responded instantly,

"Understood, Mr. Sterling. The paperwork will be finalized in five minutes."

Richard’s smug smile instantly vanished. His face went pale, the color draining from his cheeks so fast he looked as though he might faint. Vanguard Enterprises was his company, and the Riverside project was his entire life's work. It was fully funded by Sterling Capital—a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate whose elusive founder, Charles Sterling, rarely appeared in public.

"You... you're Charles Sterling?"
Richard stammered, his voice trembling as he finally connected the dots. He looked from Charles to Toby, his mind racing in sheer panic.
"But... why is your son working as a low-level mechanic?"

Charles looked at his son with immense pride.

"Because unlike you, Richard, my son wanted to learn our businesses from the ground up. He wanted to earn his respect, not demand it."
