Previously: When a smug wealthy man sneered at a humble young mechanic, he thought he could get away with abuse. He had no idea the boy's father was watching.

A Lesson in True Value

Desperation took over Richard. The arrogant facade crumbled completely, leaving a broken man who realized he had just destroyed his own empire in a single, foolish moment.

"Mr. Sterling, please,"
Richard begged, taking a step toward Charles.
"I didn't know. It was a misunderstanding! I was just stressed about Emily's future. Please, don't ruin my company. I will apologize to Toby. I'll do whatever it takes!"

Charles ignored the pleas, turning instead to his son.

"It’s your call, Toby,"
Charles said quietly.
"He laid a hand on you. In our world, that has consequences. If you want him ruined, he is ruined."

Richard turned to Toby, his eyes wide with terror, silently pleading with the young man he had called trash only minutes prior. Toby looked at the welt on his neck, then at the pathetic state of his girlfriend’s father. He took a deep breath, his voice steady and mature.

"I don't want to ruin you, Richard,"
Toby said.
"But things are going to change. First, you will never look down on anyone who works an honest job again. Second, you will sign over the deed to the local youth center you've been trying to evict for your new high-rises. We will fund its renovation instead."

Richard nodded frantically.

"Yes, yes! Absolutely. I'll sign it today!"

Just then, Emily rushed into the service bay, having heard the commotion. She took one look at Toby's bruised neck, then at her father's cowardly, groveling posture. She walked straight to Toby, taking his hand in hers.

"I'm so sorry, Toby,"
she whispered, before looking at her father with utter disappointment.
"I'm staying with Toby, Dad. And I'm proud of the man he is."

Richard could only watch in silence as his daughter chose the honest mechanic over his toxic wealth. Charles smiled, putting a proud hand on his son's shoulder. True nobility is not found in the price of a suit, but in the strength of one's character and the willingness to stand up for what is right.
