Previously: When a wealthy businessman returns to his mansion ahead of schedule, he is shocked to find his estranged daughter working as a maid—and his wife holding a dark secret.

The Unraveling of a Lie

Richard did not look at his wife. His gaze remained locked on the trembling young woman on the floor. Memories he had tried to bury for a decade came rushing back. Ten years ago, after a bitter divorce fueled by his family's disapproval, his ex-wife had vanished with their daughter, Grace. Richard had spent years searching, but the trail had gone cold. He had been led to believe they had moved abroad and wanted nothing to do with him—a narrative Evelyn had gently but consistently reinforced throughout their marriage.

"Richard, sweetie, don't mind her," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with artificial warmth as she stepped closer, placing a hand on his arm. "She’s just an agency hire. Extremely emotional and quite incompetent, I'm afraid. I was just about to dismiss her."

But Richard’s eyes caught something else. Hanging from the maid’s neck, partially slipping out of her blue collar, was a tarnished silver locket shaped like a crescent moon. He had bought that exact locket for his daughter's eighth birthday.

"Grace?" Richard breathed, stepping past his wife and dropping to his knees on the wet granite floor, completely ignoring the soapy water ruining his expensive suit. "Grace, look at me."

The young woman slowly raised her head, her eyes red and filled with fear. "I'm sorry, Mr. Sterling. I shouldn't have said that. I'll pack my things and leave."

"No, you won't," Richard commanded, his voice cracking with emotion. He reached out, his hand trembling as he brushed a wet strand of hair from her forehead. "It is you. My God, Grace, what is happening here?"

Evelyn’s face turned ashen. She quickly tried to intervene, her tone sharpening. "Richard, stop this ridiculous scene! You are being manipulated. She is a fraud who targeted our household for money!"

But Grace shook her head, looking at Evelyn with a mixture of fear and anger. "I didn't target anyone. You found me, Evelyn. You told me my father was ashamed of me and that if I wanted to see him, I had to earn my place here. You made me work like a servant just to catch a glimpse of him!"
