Previously: When Charles brutally kicked an elderly woman outside his wife's maternity suite, he thought he was protecting his newborn. He had no idea the woman held the key to his family's dark past.

The Mask of Cruelty Slips

The heavy glass door slid open with a soft hiss as Rebecca rushed out, ignoring the protests of the nurses. She ignored her husband’s outstretched arms and threw herself onto the cold tiles beside Dorothy. Tears streamed down her face as she gathered the bruised, trembling woman into her arms.

"Mom! Oh my God, Mom, are you okay?" Rebecca sobbed, gently brushing the grey hair from Dorothy's forehead.

Charles froze, his arrogant posture instantly evaporating. His jaw dropped as he stared at his wife, then at the bruised elderly woman cradling a bruised elbow. The word echoed in his mind like a physical blow.

"Mom?" Charles stammered, his voice losing its commanding edge. "Rebecca, what are you talking about? Your mother passed away years ago. This... this woman is a vagrant!"
"She is my mother, Charles!" Rebecca screamed, her voice echoing down the sterile hallway. "My father forced her away when I was a child because she wasn't 'high-society' enough for his family, just like your parents tried to do to me! She kept her distance to protect me, but she only wanted to see her grandson!"

Dorothy winced as she tried to sit up, her hand trembling as she reached for one of the scattered red apples. Charles felt a cold sweat break out on his neck. The hospital staff had already called security, and a crowd was beginning to gather, whispering in hushed, judgmental tones. But the humiliation was nothing compared to the sudden realization of what he had done. He had brutally attacked his wife's mother, a woman who had sacrificed her own happiness so Rebecca could grow up in comfort.

Yet, as Dorothy looked up at Charles, there was no hatred in her eyes. Instead, her gaze held a deep, sorrowful recognition that went far beyond a mother-in-law meeting her daughter's husband. She looked at his navy suit, his polished shoes, and finally, his face.
