A Disturbance at the Estate

The soft glow of the string lights cast a warm, amber hue over the manicured lawn of the estate. Edward stood near the marble fountain, his grey linen suit immaculate, holding a glass of vintage champagne. It was his engagement party, a gathering of the city’s most influential and wealthy families. Laughter and the clinking of crystal filled the air, painting a picture of absolute perfection. But that perfection was abruptly shattered when Edward noticed a figure standing near the grand buffet table.

It was a young boy, perhaps eleven or twelve years old, looking entirely out of place. He wore a stained grey t-shirt and worn-out sneakers. In his small, trembling hands, he clutched a simple, rustic wooden flute. Several guests began to whisper, casting disgusted glances at the intruder. Edward felt a surge of irritation. How had a street child managed to bypass the heavy security at the front gates?

Striding over with a cold, commanding presence, Edward gestured sharply to his security guards. "Hey! Get him out of here!" he shouted, his voice cutting through the polite chatter of the crowd.

The boy didn't run. Instead, he looked up at Edward, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

"Please, I need money. My mom is sick,"
the child pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation.

Edward, annoyed by what he assumed was a cheap ploy for sympathy, sneered coldly.

"Then earn it. Play,"
he challenged, gesturing mockingly at the wooden flute.

But the boy did not play. Slowly, he lowered the flute and reached into his worn pocket. He pulled out a faded, crumpled photograph and handed it to Edward. Frowning, Edward took the paper. As his eyes focused on the image, his heart stopped. It was a photo of himself as a young man, laughing alongside his first love, Sarah, who was holding a tiny baby. Shock washed over him, turning his face pale.

"Where did you get this?" Edward whispered, his voice trembling.

The boy looked up at him softly and replied,

"My mother said you'd know your son."
