Previously: When wealthy Edward tried to throw a dirty boy off his estate, the child handed him an old photograph that shook his entire world and revealed a long-buried secret.

The Shadows of the Past

The revelation struck Edward like a physical blow. The boy’s name was Toby, and as Edward stared into the child’s eyes, he saw the unmistakable reflection of his own features and those of Sarah, the woman he had loved and lost twelve years ago. He had been told by his mother that Sarah had left the country and terminated her pregnancy. It had been a lie that had haunted him for over a decade.

Before Edward could speak, his mother, Eleanor, rushed over, her face twisted in anger. "Edward, don't listen to this little street urchin," she hissed, grabbing his arm. "He’s clearly a scammer trying to extort us. Security, throw him out immediately!"

But Edward pulled away from his mother’s grasp, his gaze fixed on her guilt-ridden eyes. "Is this true, Mother? Did you know about him?" he demanded, his voice shaking with a mixture of grief and rising fury.

Toby stepped forward, pointing a trembling finger at Eleanor.

"She’s the one who paid my mom to leave!"
the boy cried.
"She threatened to destroy my mom's family if she ever contacted you again. My mom didn't want me to come here, but she's dying in the hospital, and we have no money left!"

Eleanor did not deny it. Instead, she drew herself up coldly.

"I did what was necessary to protect your future, Edward. You were destined for greatness, not to be ruined by a penniless girl,"
she declared without a shred of remorse.

Edward felt a deep, sickening betrayal. His entire life had been built on a foundation of lies orchestrated by his own mother. Just then, his fiancée, Victoria, joined them. She looked at Toby with disgust and then turned her cold gaze to Edward. "If you walk out of this party with this child, Edward, our engagement is over, and my father will pull his millions from your firm. You will lose everything you've built," she warned.

You will lose everything you've built," she warned.
