The Uninvited Guest

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Plaza ballroom cast a warm, golden glow over the high-society charity gala. Grace, immaculate in her tailored white blazer, moved gracefully among the city's elite. As the hostess of the evening, her reputation was spotless. But her poise shattered the moment she spotted her ten-year-old son, Luke, near the back of the hall. He wasn't mingling with the guests. Instead, he was standing beside a table, serving a plate of gourmet spaghetti to a boy who looked like he had just crawled out of a ditch.

The stranger, Bobby, was bruised, his clothes torn and covered in grime. He looked no older than Luke, but his eyes held a hollow, haunted look. Grace felt a surge of panic and anger. This was a five-star event, and a street kid was sitting at the VIP table.

Marching over, Grace demanded angrily,

"What are you doing?"

Her voice cut through the soft classical music. She reached out to pull Luke away, but to her astonishment, her usually obedient son stood up protectively in front of the dirty boy. Luke’s eyes were wide with desperate pleading.

"Mom stop, you don't understand," Luke cried out, his voice cracking. "He's the reason I'm alive."

Grace froze, her breath catching in her throat. The anger in her chest instantly turned to ice. She looked from her son to the silent, trembling boy holding the fork.

"What are you talking about?" she gasped, her eyes wide with shock.

Luke pointed a shaking finger at Bobby.

"He pushed me off the road before the SUV hit me," Luke explained, tears finally spilling over. "He took the hit for me, Mom."

The memory of the hit-and-run accident three weeks ago rushed back to Grace. Luke had escaped with just a few scrapes, but the police had never found the anonymous boy who witnesses said had shoved him out of the path of the speeding vehicle.
