A Shattered Homecoming

The heavy mahogany doors of the estate swung open with a soft click. John stepped into the grand foyer, his mind still racing with the chaotic details of an abruptly canceled business trip. He tossed his keys onto the marble console table, expecting the usual silence of his sprawling, empty home. But as he looked toward the sweeping spiral staircase, his heart stopped.

There, kneeling on the cold marble floor in a light grey shirt, was a young woman. Her shoulders shook with silent, agonizing sobs. When she slowly raised her head, John gasped, the air rushing out of his lungs. It was his daughter, Emma.

"Dad?" she whispered, her voice cracking with a mixture of disbelief and sheer terror.

John stood frozen, his eyes scanning her pale face and the faint, dark bruises on her wrists. "Emma?" he choked out, taking a hesitant step forward. She was supposed to be at a specialized retreat in Switzerland, recovering from her mental health struggles—at least, that was what his wife, Sarah, had told him. Yet here she was, trembling at his feet, looking like a prisoner who had just escaped a dungeon.

Before John could drop his briefcase and rush to her side, the clicking of designer heels echoed through the hallway. Sarah strolled into the foyer, wearing a silky green lounge suit and holding a half-empty glass of red wine. A serene, chilling smile played on her lips as she looked from Emma to her husband.

"Oh, you're back early," Sarah said smoothly, her voice completely devoid of panic.

A wave of pure, icy fury washed over John. He looked at his wife, seeing her true face for the very first time. Without a word, he pulled out his phone, dialed a direct number, and pressed it to his ear.

"Start the investigation. Now," he commanded, his eyes locked onto Sarah's suddenly freezing gaze.
