The miracle of Chloe standing on her own feet was immediately overshadowed by the look of sheer terror on her face. Instead of celebrating, she stared at her mother with wide, haunted eyes. James looked from his daughter to his wife, his mind spinning. Two years ago, a car accident had supposedly paralyzed Chloe from the waist down. The specialists had all agreed the damage was permanent. Yet, here she was, standing on the wet driveway.

"Amanda, what is the meaning of this?" James demanded, his voice trembling. "How long has she been able to walk?"

Amanda crossed her arms, a smug, chilling smile spreading across her face. "Ask your precious mother," she sneered. "She’s the one who set the rules. Or better yet, ask Chloe about her daily vitamins."

James knelt beside Chloe, taking her freezing hands in his. "Sweetheart, tell me the truth. What is going on?"

Chloe began to sob, her voice barely a whisper.

"Mommy makes me take the blue pills every morning, Daddy. She said if I ever stood up or told you I could feel my legs, you would leave us and we would have no money. But today, I refused to take them. That's why she got mad and sprayed me with the hose."

James felt a sickening wave of horror wash over him. The "blue pills" were heavy muscle relaxants and sedatives prescribed to Chloe after her accident, which Amanda had been secretly administering in high doses to keep the girl lethargic and unable to walk. James's mother had set up a massive medical trust fund for Chloe’s care—a fund that Amanda and James's mother jointly managed. If Chloe recovered, the millions in the trust fund would revert to a charity. Amanda and James's own mother had conspired to keep the child disabled for financial gain.
