Previously: A scornful yacht heir's encounter with a gritty salvage diver outside an elite academy turns deadly serious when a priceless artifact surfaces, revealing a deep betrayal and a thirst for overdue justice.

A Deal Gone Sour

Carter, emboldened by Tommy’s stoic silence and perhaps mistaking it for fear, took a menacing step forward. He lunged, his gloved hand aiming to shove Tommy’s shoulder, to assert his dominance with a physical insult. But Tommy was faster. Years spent wrestling with the unforgiving ocean had trained his body for survival. His calloused, sea-scarred hand shot out with astonishing speed, intercepting Carter’s wrist in a crushing vise grip. The impact was a sickening, wet slap that echoed in the damp air, jolting Carter’s entire upper body and halting his aggressive shove dead in its tracks.

“Keep your hands to yourself, Ross,” Tommy’s voice rumbled, low and authoritative, cutting through the patter of rain. “I’m here to settle our salvage account.”

Carter Ross stood frozen, his arrogant smirk wiped clean from his face. His pupils dilated in shock and pain as the pressure on his wrist intensified. His breath hitched sharply, paralyzed by the sheer force and unexpected resistance. The sneer had vanished, replaced by a dawning realization that he had severely underestimated the man kneeling before him. This wasn't a beggar pleading for scraps; this was a man demanding what was rightfully his.

With a deliberate, controlled release, Tommy let go of Carter’s trembling wrist. The sound of dual pressurized stainless-steel latches being snapped open with a loud pneumatic hiss and sharp metallic clatter drew the attention of the few passing wealthy pedestrians and academy staff. Tommy flung back the reinforced lid of the vault. Inside, nestled on saturated black velvet, lay a blindingly incandescent object: a 17th-century solid gold Spanish royal monstrance. Its intricate sunburst halo was encrusted with uncut Colombian emeralds and rubies, blazing through the overcast gloom like captured stars.

“Recovered four hundred feet down on the reef you abandoned,” Tommy stated, his voice biting and steady. “The one you sold me the recovery deed for, after telling me it was worthless.”

Carter Ross stared, his chin quivering violently. Color drained completely from his waxen cheeks as the reality of what Tommy had found—and what Carter had tried to hide—hit him with the force of a rogue wave. His knees threatened to buckle, the weight of his deceit suddenly crushing him. The priceless artifact, a symbol of his greed and betrayal, now lay exposed before the world.
