Previously: A scornful yacht heir's encounter with a gritty salvage diver outside an elite academy turns deadly serious when a priceless artifact surfaces, revealing a deep betrayal and a thirst for overdue justice.

A Pirate's Due

Gasps erupted from the small crowd of onlookers and academy chauffeurs who had stopped to witness the unfolding drama. As Tommy Briggs hoisted the thirty-pound, radiant gold sacred relic into the rain, water sizzled and vaporized, cascading over the ancient, hand-hammered filigree. Carter Ross staggered back, stumbling against the wet fender of his limousine, clutching his chest as if struck by a physical blow. His face was a mask of frantic, stammering horror.

“That’s… that’s the Santa Victoria monstrance…” Carter stammered, his voice cracking. “Eighty million dollars in pure Spanish bullion… You can’t have it!”

Tommy’s eyes narrowed into cold daggers as the rain beaded on his stoic brow. His forearm veins bulged under the relic's immense weight, a testament to his strength and resolve. He ignored Carter’s desperate outburst, his gaze fixed on the broken billionaire. The contrast between the grimy diver holding a king’s ransom and the impeccably dressed heir on the verge of collapse was stark and damning.

As the heavy bronze bell of St. Jude’s tolled overhead, signaling the end of the school day, Tommy slammed the reinforced vault lid shut with a thunderous mechanical boom that echoed down the street. He swung the heavy strap of the vault over his broad shoulder, the weight seemingly insignificant. Then, he stepped deliberately into Carter’s trembling personal space, towering over the now-broken billionaire.

“You sold me the recovery deed for fifty grand,” Tommy stated, his voice lethal and razor-sharp. “A pittance for a treasure you conveniently forgot to mention. See you at Sotheby’s, Ross.”

Carter Ross remained silent, his lower lip trembling uncontrollably in the freezing rain. Tears of catastrophic financial ruin welled along his lower eyelids. His empire, built on bluster and deceit, was crumbling around him. Tommy Briggs, the man he had scorned and dismissed, had just collected a debt far greater than money could ever repay. The sea, it seemed, always gave back what was owed, one way or another. Justice, like the tides, was inevitable.
