A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom. Arthur lunged forward, grabbing Jacob by the shoulder of his worn jacket.

"Get your hands off her! Guards, throw this lunatic into the street!"
he roared. But as the security guards grabbed Jacob's arms, Alice gasped. Her hands trembled on the armrests of her wheelchair.

"Father, wait!" Alice whispered, her voice shaking. For the first time in five years, a faint color returned to her pale cheeks.

"I... I felt something. A warmth in my legs."

Arthur froze, his face suddenly turning pale. It wasn't joy that filled his eyes, but a fleeting expression of sheer terror. Jacob, struggling against the guards' grip, looked directly at Arthur.

"You're not afraid that I'm a fraud, Arthur,"
Jacob said, his voice ringing loud enough for the guests to hear.
"You're terrified that she will actually stand. Because if she stands, she will realize she was never permanently paralyzed."

Whispers broke out among the wealthy crowd. Arthur’s grip on his daughter’s chair tightened.

"That is a lie! The doctors said the nerve damage was irreversible!"
he shouted, though his voice cracked.

Jacob shook himself free from the guards, who had hesitated upon seeing Alice's reaction.

"The doctors you paid off, Arthur,"
Jacob revealed, stepping closer.
"I was the physical therapist at the clinic three years ago. I found the records. You have been putting nerve-blocking medication in her daily vitamin infusions. You kept her wheelchair-bound so you could maintain sole control over her late mother's multi-million-dollar trust fund, which she only inherits if she is deemed fit and independent."
