The ballroom was dead silent. Alice looked from her father's trembling hands to Jacob's encouraging eyes. The realization of her father's betrayal washed over her, replacing her fear with a sudden, burning resolve. She grabbed the armrests of her wheelchair.

"Is this true, Father?"

she asked, her voice cracking with emotion. Arthur couldn't look her in the eye. His silence was the ultimate confession.

Jacob stepped forward, offering his hand.

"You don't need his permission anymore, Alice. The medication has been out of your system for three days because I managed to swap your vials. Your body is ready. Trust yourself."

With a deep breath, Alice took Jacob’s hand. The crowd held its breath as she slowly shifted her weight forward. Her knees trembled violently, but Jacob held her steady with unwavering strength. Slowly, miraculously, Alice pushed herself up. Her feet, untouched by the ballroom floor for half a decade, firmly planted themselves on the polished wood.

She was standing. Tears streamed down her face as she looked down at her own feet, then up at Jacob. A thunderous applause erupted throughout the grand hall, leaving Arthur standing frozen and ruined in the shadow of his exposed greed. Security guards, realizing the truth, stepped back and called the authorities instead.

Jacob smiled, gently wrapping his arm around her waist to support her.

"May I have this dance now?"

he asked softly. Alice nodded, tears of joy in her eyes as they took their first slow, beautiful steps together.
