Diana laughed nervously, a high-pitched, fluttering sound that echoed hollowly in the grand entryway. She reached out to touch Edward’s arm, but he coldly stepped back, refusing her touch. The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife.

"Oh, darling, don't be so dramatic," Diana stammered, her smile faltering. "Sophia and I were just... playing a game! She wanted to understand how hard the staff works. She volunteered, really!"

Sophia shook her head violently, fresh tears spilling over her red cheeks. She clutched her father’s arm, her voice trembling with months of pent-up fear and exhaustion.

"That's not true, Dad!" Sophia sobbed. "The moment you left for your trip, she fired the cleaning staff. She took my phone, locked me in the attic bedroom, and told me that if I didn't clean the entire house from top to bottom, she would convince you to cut off my college tuition! She said I was nothing but a burden to you."

Edward felt a physical ache in his chest. Sophia was his entire world, the living memory of his late wife. He had married Diana thinking she would bring warmth back into their lives, but instead, he had welcomed a monster into his home. He looked at Diana, who was now turning pale, her carefully constructed facade crumbling.

"Is this true, Diana?" Edward asked, his voice shaking with a mixture of grief and rage.

Diana’s eyes darted around the room, looking for an escape. Seeing none, her expression hardened. The sweet, loving wife vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating opportunist.

"And what if it is?" Diana hissed, dropping all pretense of innocence. "She is spoiled, Edward! She needs to learn her place. Besides, who are you going to believe? Your hysterical daughter, or your wife?"

Edward stared at her, disgusted. He realized with absolute certainty that he had made the biggest mistake of his life by bringing this woman into his daughter's sanctuary.
