The Homecoming

The heavy mahogany doors of the luxury estate swung open, letting in the cool evening draft. Philip stepped into the grand foyer, loosening his tie after a grueling three-day business trip. He expected to hear the soft melody of classical music or the comforting scent of dinner being prepared. Instead, he was met with a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by a soft, rhythmic scratching sound and a muffled sob.

His eyes traveled across the high-gloss white marble tiles, reflecting the golden light of the massive crystal chandelier. There, kneeling on the cold floor, was his nineteen-year-old daughter, Lucy. She was wearing a cheap, scratchy light grey maid uniform that was three sizes too big. Her dirty blonde waves fell over her face, damp with sweat and tears as she desperately scrubbed a faint stain on the stone.

Sitting comfortably on a plush armchair just a few feet away was Elizabeth, Philip’s wife of only six months. She wore a stunning champagne-colored silk gown, her manicured fingers wrapped around a crystal glass. She watched Lucy’s struggles with a cold, detached amusement.

Hearing the door, Lucy looked up. Her eyes were red and swollen. When she saw her father, a gasp of pure desperation escaped her lips.

"Dad! Dad, she's making me..." Lucy cried out, her voice cracking as she tried to stand up, only for her knees to slip on the soapy marble.

Elizabeth instantly stood up, her face transforming into a mask of sweet affection. She smoothed down her silk gown and stepped forward, blocking Lucy from Philip’s view.

"Oh, darling! You're home early!" Elizabeth purred, flashing a flawless, practiced smile.

Philip didn’t look at his wife. His gaze remained locked on his sobbing daughter, who was trembling on the floor. A cold, dangerous fury ignited in his chest. He stepped past Elizabeth, his eyes dark with a protective rage.

"Why is my daughter kneeling?" Philip demanded, his voice a low, terrifying growl.
