A Father Comes Home Early to Find His Daughter Scrubbing His Stepmother’s Floors
Previously: When Philip returned home early from a business trip, he expected a quiet evening. Instead, he found his beloved daughter Lucy on her knees in a maid's uniform, crying.
The Mask Slips
Elizabeth’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before she quickly recovered. She let out a soft, airy laugh, waving her hand dismissively as if the entire situation were a mere misunderstanding.
"Oh, don't be so dramatic, Philip," Elizabeth said smoothly, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "Lucy was just helping out. She volunteered to clean up her own mess. It's good for her to learn a little humility and responsibility, don't you think?"
Philip ignored his wife's excuses. He walked over to Lucy, ignoring the soapy water ruining his expensive leather shoes. He knelt down beside her, gently pulling her to her feet and wrapping his arms around her shaking frame. Lucy buried her face in her father's wool suit jacket, weeping uncontrollably.
"Tell me what happened, sweetheart," Philip whispered, his heart breaking at his daughter's fragile state. "Tell me the truth."
Lucy pulled back slightly, wiping her eyes with her sleeve. She pointed a trembling finger at Elizabeth, whose expression was rapidly turning from sweet to sour.
"The moment you left, she locked me in the guest room," Lucy sobbed. "She took my phone, threw away my clothes, and told me that if I didn't act like the help, she would throw out Mom's old journals and jewelry. She made me wear this... she said I was nothing but a parasite in her house!"
Philip felt the blood rush to his ears. His late wife's belongings were the only physical memories Lucy had left of her mother. Elizabeth had used them as a weapon. He stood up slowly, turning to face his new wife. The cold anger in his eyes was replaced by a deadly, calculating silence.
Elizabeth stepped back, her bravado finally cracking. She realized she had pushed too far, but she still tried to play her final card.
"She's lying, Philip! She's just trying to ruin our marriage because she's jealous!" Elizabeth hissed, her voice losing all its refinement.
