Austin’s laughter died down, replaced by a defensive sneer as he stepped forward. He adjusted his green collegiate jacket, looking down his nose at the stranger.

"Mind your own business, pal,"

Austin snapped, his voice dripping with arrogance.

"She’s my fiancée. If she wants to be clumsy on the street, I have every right to laugh. It was funny."

His friends nodded in agreement, trying to look intimidating, but the stranger in the navy jacket didn't back down an inch.

"It doesn't matter who she is to you,"

the stranger said, his voice calm but incredibly firm.

"A real man doesn't let the woman he loves lie on the wet concrete while he laughs with his buddies. You should be ashamed of yourself."

Grace stood there, shivering in her pink puffer jacket, looking at Austin. It was as if a veil had been lifted from her eyes. For months, she had tolerated his subtle put-downs, his arrogance, and the way he always prioritized his friends over her. But seeing him stand there, completely unbothered by her pain and defensive of his own cruelty, made something snap inside her. She realized that this was not the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.

Slowly, Grace reached down and pulled the sparkling engagement ring off her left hand. The metal felt ice-cold against her skin. She stepped past the kind stranger and stood directly in front of Austin. Without a word, she dropped the ring into the pocket of his green jacket.

"We are done, Austin,"

she said, her voice remarkably steady.

"You can laugh all the way home."

Austin’s face turned bright red.

"Are you serious?"

he hissed.

"Over this? You'll be begging for me back tomorrow when my new business partnership goes through! You're making the biggest mistake of your life!"

Grace simply shook her head and walked away, accompanied by the stranger who introduced himself as Kyle.
