Maxwell Vance gestured toward the cafe doors. "Shall we go inside where it is warm, Landon?" Landon could only nod dumbly as Max's security detail opened the doors. The little brass bell chimed merrily, contrasting sharply with the heavy silence that fell over the room. Troy stood frozen behind the counter, his face completely drained of color. He began to tremble as Max walked up to him, the wet leather jacket dripping onto the pristine floor Troy loved so much.

"Mr. Vance!" Troy stammered, his voice cracking. "I... I had no idea it was you! If I had known, I would have personally run out to assist you! Please, let me get you a warm towel, some coffee—"

Max held up a single hand, silencing Troy instantly. "You didn't need to know who I was to show basic human decency," Max said, his voice echoing with cold authority. "You showed me exactly who you are when you thought I was just a man with nothing to offer you. You threw out a loyal employee for showing the kind of compassion this world desperately needs." Max turned to his lead security officer. "Call corporate. Terminate Troy's contract immediately. He is banned from all Vance properties effective today."

Troy looked as if he might faint. He began packing his things in a daze, realizing his career in the harbor district was completely over. Max then turned back to Landon, his expression softening into a warm, paternal smile.

"Landon, a young man with your heart shouldn't be wiping counters for a living," Max said. "I want to offer you two things. First, a full scholarship to study whatever you want at any university in the country. Second, until you graduate, I want you to take over as the general manager of this cafe. We will pay you a corporate manager's salary, and you can run this place with the kindness and respect it deserves."

Tears welled in Landon's eyes as he shook Max's hand. He had stepped out into the freezing rain expecting to lose everything, only to find his entire life transformed. In a world where you can choose to be anything, choosing to be kind will always be the most rewarding path of all.
