The Sealed Casket

The air in the living room was thick with the scent of lilies and candle wax. The heavy drapes were drawn, allowing only the dim, amber glow of the wall sconces to illuminate the patterned wallpaper. It was a solemn, private wake, arranged in haste. Maria stood rigid beside the heavy, dark mahogany casket, her fingers gripping the polished wood. Dressed in a black silk blouse and a matching skirt, her pale face was a mask of cold composure. Her copper hair caught the low light as she stared blankly at the double doors.

Suddenly, the doors burst open. Leo, her younger brother, stumbled into the room. His styled blonde hair was disheveled, and his dark blue blazer was wrinkled from travel. Tears streamed down his face as he cried out, his voice cracking with raw grief.

"Dad! Dad! No, this can't be happening!"

Leo collapsed onto the heavy wooden lid of the casket, his body shaking with violent sobs. Inside the dark, suffocating confines of the coffin, a terrifying reality unfolded. Arthur, their father, lay trapped in the dark. He was not dead. A thick strip of silver duct tape was pressed firmly over his mouth, stifling his desperate screams. His eyes were wide with pure terror, darting around the pitch-black space as he heard his son's voice echoing through the wood. He hammered his fists weakly against the padded lining, but the heavy mahogany muffled the sound completely.

On the outside, Leo looked up at his sister, his eyes red and pleading.

"When did all this happen, Maria? Why didn't you call me sooner? I want to see him. I need to see my father one last time."

As Leo reached for the brass latch of the lid, Maria’s hand shot out. She gripped his arm with terrifying strength, pulling him back. Her eyes flickered with panic, and she leaned in, whispering frantically.

"No, you can't! It can't be opened, Leo. Your father had a disease. A very contagious, deadly disease. The doctors insisted the casket remain sealed for everyone's safety."
