Previously: When Leo rushed into his father's wake demanding to see him one last time, his sister Maria panicked. She claimed a contagious disease kept the casket sealed—but the truth was far more terrifying.

Unlocking the Truth

With a surge of adrenaline, Leo ignored his sister's shrieks and threw his weight against the heavy brass latches. They popped open with a loud, metallic click. Maria lunged at him, clawing at his face, but Leo managed to shove her back. With one final, desperate effort, he flung the heavy mahogany lid wide open.

The sight inside made Leo’s heart stop. His father, Arthur, was lying on his back, his hands bound with thick zip ties, and heavy duct tape covering his mouth. His eyes were bloodshot and filled with tears of pure relief as he saw his son. Leo gasped, immediately reaching down to rip the tape off his father's mouth. Arthur gasped for air, coughing violently as Leo quickly sliced the zip ties on his wrists with a pocketknife.

"Dad! Oh my god, Dad! What did she do to you?" Leo cried, pulling his father up into a tight embrace.

Arthur, weak but conscious, pointed a trembling finger at Maria, who stood frozen near the doorway, her face pale as a ghost.

"She drugged me, Leo," Arthur rasped, his voice hoarse. "She wanted my money. She forced me to sign over the inheritance, and then she locked me in here. She was going to bury me alive to make sure I could never speak the truth."

The horrifying reality set in. Maria had accumulated massive debts and devised a sinister plot to fake her father's death and inherit his entire estate. She had planned the swift, private wake to ensure no one would ask questions. Realizing her plan had completely crumbled, Maria turned and bolted toward the front door. But she didn't get far. Leo had already dialed emergency services when he first arrived, suspicious of the sudden wake. The police cruisers pulled into the driveway just as Maria tried to escape, arresting her on the spot.

Arthur clung to his son, weeping with gratitude. They had lost a daughter and a sister to greed, but they had saved each other. In the end, the deepest bonds of family cannot be buried by lies, proving that the truth will always find a way to breathe.
