Leo stared at his sister, his grief momentarily giving way to deep confusion. He slowly pulled his arm from her tight grip, stepping back. He shook his head, trying to process her words. It didn't make any sense. Arthur had been in perfect health when they spoke over the phone just forty-eight hours ago.

"A contagious disease?" Leo whispered, his voice laced with growing suspicion. "He was fine on Tuesday, Maria. He was planning his retirement. How could he catch something so deadly and die within a day without any of us knowing?"

Maria’s face hardened, her defensive walls immediately going up. She smoothed down her black silk blouse, attempting to regain her composure.

"It was sudden, Leo. A rare, aggressive bacterial infection. By the time the ambulance arrived, it was too late. The health department ordered an immediate, sealed burial. Do you think I wanted this? I am trying to protect you!"

It was barely audible, like fingernails dragging across satin. Leo froze, his eyes darting to the mahogany lid. He leaned closer, pressing his ear against the polished wood. Maria saw his reaction and panicked. She grabbed his shoulder, trying to drag him away from the casket.

"Stop it, Leo! You're losing your mind because of the grief. We need to leave this room right now. The funeral directors are coming to transport the body."
