The heavy silence in the grand foyer of the whispering estate was broken only by the soft, hiccuping sobs of five-year-old Noah. Arthur held his son tightly against his chest, his knuckles white as he looked from the trembling young maid, Sarah, up to the grand winding staircase. Standing halfway up the stairs, bathed in the cold light of the chandelier, was his mother, Eleanor. She wore her classic beige silk dress, her posture as rigid and unforgiving as marble.

A Confrontation in the Foyer

Arthur’s voice shook with a mixture of confusion and growing anger.

"Why did you fire her, Mother? She has been nothing but gentle with Noah."

Eleanor did not flinch. She looked down her nose at them, her voice cutting through the chilly air.

"Because she lied from the day she entered this house. She is a fraud, Arthur, and I will not have her corrupting my grandson."

Sarah, dressed in her dark grey and white uniform, collapsed to her knees. Her light brown curls fell over her face as she sobbed, clutching a tarnished silver pocket watch to her chest.

"I didn't lie to hurt anyone,"

she gasped, her voice thick with unshed tears.

"I only came here to find out what happened to her. Celeste was my sister."

Arthur felt the room tilt. Celeste. The name of his late wife, the woman who had supposedly abandoned him and their newborn baby five years ago, only to perish in obscurity. He stepped forward, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"What are you talking about? Celeste had no family."

"That is what my mother-in-law wanted you to believe,"

Sarah cried, looking up with fierce, tear-filled eyes. She held out the silver watch.

"This belonged to Celeste. Your mother kept Noah's..."

"Silence!"

Eleanor screamed from the stairs, her elegant facade finally cracking.

"Get out of my house this instant!"

But Arthur was no longer listening to his mother. He looked at Sarah, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper.

"Tell me the truth."
