The Proposal on the Concrete

The autumn wind howled through the towering glass canyons of the financial district, but Evelyn felt entirely numb to the cold. Dressed in a tailored beige coat, her eyes hidden behind oversized sunglasses, she stared at the disheveled man sitting on the damp pavement. It was Matthew. The man she had grieved for three long years. The man her family swore was dead.

He was unrecognizable to the casual passerby—his face sunburnt, his hands calloused, wrapped in a tattered wool coat. But Evelyn knew the truth. Dropping to her knees on the cold concrete, she ignored the gasps of the wealthy onlookers who stopped to watch the bizarre spectacle. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a blue velvet ring box, opening it to reveal a gleaming gold band.

"Marry me. Please," she pleaded, her voice trembling with a mixture of hope and terror.

Matthew stared at her, his hazel eyes clouded with confusion and a deep, aching weariness. He didn't recognize the beautiful woman kneeling before him. To him, she was just another wealthy stranger playing a cruel game.

"Why me?" he asked, his voice rough as gravel.

Tears slipped silently beneath Evelyn’s sunglasses. She leaned closer, her voice barely a whisper against the city noise.

"Because it's you. Please, Matthew."

Before he could push her away, a black SUV screeched to a halt at the curb. The doors flew open, and three men in dark suits rushed out. One of them, a stern-faced guard Evelyn recognized instantly, pointed directly at them.

"Get him, stop!" the guard roared.

Matthew’s eyes darted from the approaching men to the ring box. Inside, engraved in the gold, was a unique family emblem. A spark of recognition flashed in his eyes. He whispered in shock:

"This name..."
"Don't let him remember!" the guard screamed, lunging forward.
