I Found My Forgotten Husband on the Streets and Proposed to Save His Life
Previously: When Evelyn found her long-lost husband Matthew living as a homeless man with amnesia, she staged a public proposal to protect him—only for her family's guards to intervene.
The Secrets in the Dark
Evelyn didn't hesitate. She grabbed Matthew’s hand, pulling him up with a strength she didn't know she possessed. They sprinted into the crowd, weaving through shocked pedestrians as the guards pursued them. Ducking into a subway station, they managed to slip onto a departing train just as the doors slid shut, leaving their pursuers behind on the platform.
Hours later, they arrived at a secluded cabin in the woods, a property Evelyn’s family had forgotten they owned. Safe for the moment, Evelyn tended to Matthew's scraped hands. He sat on the edge of a wooden cot, staring intensely at the gold ring she had given him.
"My mind is like a broken mirror," Matthew said, his voice shaking. "But when I saw that crest... I remembered a fire. And a man holding me down on a boat while it burned."
Evelyn gasped, clutching his hand. "Who did that to you, Matthew?"
He looked up, tears welling in his eyes as the fog in his mind began to clear. "It was Arthur. Your father. He wanted my company’s encryption technology. When I refused to sell, he tried to eliminate me."
Before Evelyn could process the horrific betrayal, the cabin was suddenly bathed in bright, harsh light. The roaring engines of multiple SUVs echoed through the trees. The front door was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash, and Arthur stepped inside, flanked by armed security.
"Did you really think you could hide him from me, Evelyn?" her father sneered, raising a silenced pistol. "He is a ghost, and he needs to stay that way."
Evelyn threw herself in front of Matthew, shielding him. "You'll have to kill me too, Father!" she screamed.
