Nicole’s mind raced as Vance took another step forward, raising the heavy crowbar. She knew she couldn’t overpower him physically. She had to use her wits, and fast. She forced her expression to soften, swallowing her terror as she raised her hands in surrender.

“Okay, Uncle Vance. I won’t say anything,” Nicole lied, her voice shaking. “Just let me use the electromagnetic crane to move these scrap cars. We can load the crate onto your truck much faster that way.”

Vance hesitated, his greedy eyes scanning her face. Believing he had completely terrified her into submission, he slowly lowered the crowbar and nodded. Nicole stepped backward toward the crane’s control booth, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm. She climbed into the cabin, her hands flying over the dusty levers she had operated a thousand times before.

Instead of clearing a path, Nicole swung the massive electromagnetic arm directly over their heads. With a deafening hum, she activated the magnet, lifting a crushed, two-ton sedan and swinging it violently through the air. Vance gasped, diving backward as the heavy metal mass crashed down, pinning his leg beneath a stack of heavy iron beams and trapping him against the scrap wall.

Nicole bolted from the cabin. She ran to the crate, sliced Maya’s remaining bonds with her pocket knife, and pulled her sister to her feet. Together, they ran out of the salvage yard, never looking back until they reached the safety of a nearby gas station, where they dialed the police.

Within an hour, sirens wailed through the junkyard. Vance was arrested, and his illegal smuggling ring was permanently dismantled. Safe in the back of an ambulance, Nicole wrapped a warm blanket around Maya’s shoulders. The sisterly bond they had lost years ago was forged anew in the crucible of survival.
