A Father’s Worst Nightmare

For thirty-five-year-old Richard, the grand entrance hall of his suburban home had once been filled with laughter. But ever since his wife, Sarah, passed away from a sudden illness, the house had felt more like a mausoleum. Richard threw himself into his work, not out of neglect, but out of a desperate need to secure his seven-year-old daughter Lily’s future. To ensure Lily was cared for, Richard welcomed Sarah’s sister, Eleanor, into their home. Eleanor had wept at the funeral, promising to be a second mother to Lily. Richard trusted her implicitly, providing her with a generous allowance and a comfortable life.

However, over the weeks, Lily grew increasingly quiet. She stopped running to the door to greet him. Suspecting that something was amiss but unwilling to accuse his sister-in-law without proof, Richard secretly installed a high-definition security system. One rainy afternoon, Richard pulled his black sedan into the driveway. Before heading inside, a sudden instinct prompted him to open the live security feed on his phone. What he saw shattered his heart into a million pieces.

On the screen, Lily was on her knees, clad in a simple, faded dress. She was weeping silently, her tiny hands struggling to wring out a heavy mop onto the wet marble floor. Eleanor sat nearby on a plush velvet armchair, casually munching on potato chips, deliberately tossing crumbs onto the wet surface.

"Clean it again," Eleanor commanded coldly.

Lily whimpered, her voice cracking through the phone's speaker.

"My hands hurt."
Eleanor merely glared at the security camera, knowing it was there but feeling completely untouchable.

"Then cry quieter," Eleanor snapped.

Lily sobbed, clutching the mop.

"Please, I want dad!"
Eleanor sneered, leaning in close.
"He won't see this. He doesn't care."
Inside his car, Richard’s grip tightened on his phone.
"I see everything,"
he whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and absolute fury. He slammed the car door shut and marched toward the house.
