The Storm Outside and the Danger Within

The neon sign of the highway diner flickered weakly against the torrential downpour. Inside, the air smelled of stale coffee and greasy hash browns, but for nineteen-year-old Lily, the cozy diner had suddenly turned into a cage. Dressed in her faded pink polo uniform, her hands shook so violently she could barely hold her notepad. Through the rain-lashed glass doors, she had spotted a familiar, terrifying silhouette. It was Marcus, her abusive step-uncle who had spent months tracking her down after she fled her home with nothing but her late father's old military dog tags.

Desperate and cornered, Lily looked around the room. The only other customers were a group of burly, leather-clad bikers seated at the counter, laughing over thick mugs of black coffee. At the center of them sat Jax, a heavy-set, bald Caucasian man with a thick grey beard and arms covered in faded tattoos. He looked like the most dangerous man in the room, but Lily had no other choice.

Creeping up behind him, she reached out a trembling hand and tapped his broad shoulder.

"Um, sir?"
she whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring thunder.

Jax slowly turned his bearded face, his sharp blue eyes softening slightly as he looked down at the petite young woman.

"What is it, kid?"
he asked, his voice a low, gravelly rumble.

Lily swallowed hard, glancing back toward the stormy entrance.

"Look back,"
she pleaded, her eyes wide with sheer panic.

Jax's gaze drifted to the glass doors, where a shadow was moving closer. His demeanor changed instantly. The warmth vanished, replaced by a cold, protective steel. He muttered,

"Right. Stay close."
Rising to his feet like an awakening giant, he led Lily down the checkered aisle. Behind him, Cole and the other burly bikers stood up in unison, their leather jackets creaking. Jax looked ahead protectively, declaring,
"Nobody touches her."
Cole nodded grimly, responding,
"We know."
